1. Count the lug holes
Look at the wheel hub or the back of the wheel and count how many lug holes there are(also called bolt holes).
Common configurations include: 4-lug, 5-lug, 6-lug and 8 lug
2a. For even lug counts (4-lug, 6-lug, 8-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole directly across to the center of the hole opposite it.
Common configurations: 4 on 4", 6 on 5.5", 8 on 6.5"
2b. For odd lug counts (5-lug)
Measure from the center of one lug hole to the outer edge of the hole directly across (not center-to-center since there's no directly opposite hole).
Common configurations: 5 on 4.5" (most popular), 5 on 5", 5 on 4.75", 5 on 5.5"

Today we'll take a look at the Americana 12-inch by four-inch gun metal gray machined AM01 series aluminum trailer wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Now this is an aluminum wheel. It's durable, lightweight, and rustproof. We mentioned it's the Americana AM01 Series, which you can see is a five-spoke design. Has a nice gunmetal gray finish, and then they do a machine finish on the top of the spokes here, gives a nice shine to the wheel.
Now the front and even the back of the wheel are clear coated to protect against scuffs and scratches. Now on the nice features I like on this wheel is the steel inserts they put in the lug nut wells here. Those are designed to help keep your wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. So when you put this up onto the studs, you put your lugs in and torque 'em down, Those steel inserts prevent the holes from elongating or wearing down over time, so it eliminates the need for constant re-tightening of your lug nuts. This wheel is a high-quality wheel.
It does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications. A few dimensions on this, we're gonna measure the diameter, which will be measured inside the inside, and the width. So just to show you on the diameter, if we go inside the inside, there's your 12-inch diameter. And the width is always measured inside the inside bead seat to bead seat. There's your four inch width.
Now the bolt pattern on this wheel is a 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. And if you want to measure that on a wheel, that's an odd number of lugs, like in this case, five. All you have to do is pick any hole, let's say this one, and then you're gonna measure across to either one of these holes. But when you measure, it's from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of the hole that you measure to. So in this, it'll measure four and a half inches.
So that means it's a five-lug, 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Does use a wheel lug size of a half-inch by 20. Pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, diameter of that opening is 3.19 inches. And the load rating, or weight capacity on this wheel is 1,520 pounds. But that should do it for a look at the Americana 12-inch by four-inch gunmetal gray machined AM01 Series aluminum trailer wheel.

The aluminum wheel I purchased came today. The packaging was incredibly well done. The wheel had plastic rings on each side protecting the edges from any potential shipping damage. Additionally, the wheel was wrapped in a protective foam sheeting. More packing paper was added to all sides to fill out the box keeping the wheel from moving around in the box. It was like what I would have done if I were packaging it myself. Thanks to all who filled this order.
